Tim Berners-Lee, who is considered the father of theWorld Wide Web
, talked about the next version of the WWW as he envisions it, at this year’s TED (Technology
, Entertainment, Design) conference at the Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, California.

“For his next project, he’s building a web for open, linked data that could do for numbers what the Web did for words, pictures, video: unlock our data and reframe the way we use it together.”

Is HTML5 Going To Change The OS Market?

1

Posted by 3o5 | Posted in MISC, Technology | Posted on 31-05-2009

Regardless of the underlying operating system, HTML5 promises the ability to run applications platform-independant. Already being confirmed to be supported by Microsoft, Google, and Mozilla it is more than likely that all major browsers are going to feature an updated interpreter for the new version of the web programming language.

HTML 5 is currently in the developing stage and more than likely to remain in it for a few more years. Despite that, “its focus on running applications within the browser is an important driver of interest in cloud computing, where applications live somewhere off on the Internet and are delivered by the browser.

The focus of future browsers will shift from “going places” to “doing things.” This will be a boon to free operating systems, which will increasingly be able to hide themselves under the browser user interface. While Windows and Mac OSX won’t go away overnight, the pressure on them will be to innovate beyond the browser, perhaps through a common set of extensions for HTML5 applications to use.”

ASUS Doubles Up On GTX 285

Posted by 3o5 | Posted in Gaming, Technology | Posted on 30-05-2009

Pictures of an ASUS graphics card dubbed the MARS 295 Limited Edition have made their way online, and it’s something of a monster.

gtx-295-mars

Inside this big ol’ beast lies a GeForce concoction unlike anything we’ve seen thus far. Despite its 295 branding, this isn’t just a tweaked version of the GeForce GTX 295 introduced at the beginning of the year.

No sir, ASUS has opted to do something a little different and inside the MARS 295 Limited Edition, it’s sandwiching a pair of GeForce GTX 285 PCBs (printed circuit boards). That’s NVIDIA’s fastest single-GPU, doubled, and connected invisibly via internal SLI.

But why stop there? Instead of using standard 1GB cards, ASUS is using GPUs equipped with 2GB apiece, giving the MARS 295 Limited Edition a total of 4GB of GDDR3.

Two 2GB GeForce GTX 285s in one package, so that’s:

* Two 55nm GPUs clocked at 648MHz each
* A total of 480 stream processors, clocked at 1,476MHz
* 4,096MB of GDDR3 memory, clocked at an effective 2,484MHz and accessed via dual 512-bit interfaces
* 2,125 peak GFLOPS
* A peak fillrate of 41.47 Gpixel/s

Or, another way to put it, is to say it’s stupidly fast. Get really imaginative and you should be able to put two MARS 295 Limited Editions side by side for some crazy quad-GTX-285-SLI action.

We reckon we’ll see the card at next week’s COMPUTEX, but we’re in no hurry to find out pricing. The pictured card is denoted as “Limited Edition 1/1000″. We presume, then, that ASUS will be making just a limited amount, and it’ll charge a beefy premium for each and every one.

MS removes 3-application limit for Windows 7 Starter edition

Posted by 3o5 | Posted in Technology | Posted on 30-05-2009

Earlier on we reported that Microsoft would be enforcing a three-application limit on Windows 7 Starter edition. This particular limitation would hinder the user running more than three applications at once.

Microsoft seems to really want to do it right with Windows 7 and Via the Windows 7 Team Blog, Microsoft today has confirmed that the limit will not exist in the final version of the operating system:

There of course will also be Windows 7 Starter edition, but based on the feedback we’ve received from partners and customers asking us to enable a richer small notebook PC experience with Windows 7 Starter, we’ve decided to make some changes compared to previous Starter editions. For the first time, we will be making Windows 7 Starter available worldwide on small notebook PCs. We are also going to enable Windows 7 Starter customers the ability to run as many applications simultaneously as they would like, instead of being constricted to the 3 application limit that the previous Starter editions included.

This is good news for future netbook customers who want Windows 7. Now if Microsoft plays their cards right and will make pricing interesting as well, they might have something special in their hands.

I’ve been fooling around with Windows 7 for a while now, and though I do feel it’s very similar to Vista, it works really well, and the overall experience is just so much better than Windows Vista.

I’ve been installing the last release candidate on a SSD as well, just to see if I’d notice and performance differences, and good news there as well. It’s a lot faster, so the overall experience we here at Guru3D is going to be great. Now let’s hope we see some DX11 games at launch time as well :-)

MSI Wind Box DE200 nettop with ATI graphics

Posted by 3o5 | Posted in Technology | Posted on 30-05-2009

Closing in on ASUS’ new Eee Box nettops comes rival MSI’s new Wind Box DE200. Sporting a new design that reminds me of a Cylon’s helmet, the Wind Box DE200 pairs Intel’s Atom 230 1.6GHz processor with an ATI Radeon HD 4350 GPU and HDMI output.

Other specs include 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 3.5-inch 160GB hard-drive and WiFi b/g/n. The HDMI port shares space with a VGA port, making the DE200 equally happy as a low-power desktop PC as it is an entry-level HTPC.

We’re not expecting the same graphics performance that you might get from an NVIDIA Ion-based nettop like the Acer AspireRevo, but the Radeon should still offer a pleasant shove over Intel’s integrated chipsets. The MSI Wind Box DE200 will run Windows XP Home and be available in four colors – red, blue, white and black – but we don’t yet have any idea of pricing or availability [via EEE-PC.de]
