Windows 7 to ship on USB drives as well ?

According to Microsoft it is considering to ship Windows 7 on USB
flash drives
to allow netbook owners to more easily upgrade their machines:

The move, which is still under consideration, is one of several things Microsoft has looked at to try to make it convenient to upgrade machines that don’t come with a CD or DVD drives.

Microsoft executives have said that they recognize that upgrading Netbooks poses a challenge and are exploring ways that the company can make it easier. In an interview on Thursday, Senior Vice President Bill Veghte said that Microsoft had nothing to announce on that front.

Although a USB flash drive could offer the simplest way to move a Netbook to Windows 7, there are other options. Buyers with an external drive could hook up that to their Netbook, while another option would be an upgrade through a service such as Best Buy’s Geek Squad. Microsoft also sells a downloadable version of Windows today, so, in theory it could do the same with Windows 7, allowing buyers to put the OS on their own thumb drive.

Matt Bonin, a merchant director at Best Buy, said this week that the company is aiming to work with Geek Squad to develop services to streamline Windows 7 upgrades. As for Netbooks, he said the company recognizes the challenge they present and said the store already offers services to load other types of software, such as antivirus programs.

In a bit of an unusual move memory vendor Mushkin is about to launch a complete new line of NVIDIA GeForce-based graphics cards, providing end-users with yet another alternative to the crowded market of GeForce graphics cards. All of the new models will be based on the latest NVIDIA GT200 GPU architecture and will be available in both standard and custom form factors, featuring increased clocked speeds and memory capacity.

Mushkin has announced its entry in the graphics card market with the launch of a complete series of GT200-based graphics cards. This new line will be part of the company’s ultimateFX family of graphics processing units, which will apparently be comprised of GeForce-based solutions.

As part of the new series, Mushkin has debuted a couple of new products, namely the ultimateFX GeForce GTX260, GTX260 (1792MB), GTX260 OC, GTX260 OC2, GTX275, GTX275 OC, GTX275 OC2, GTX285 and GTX285 (2048MB). As you can see, there are a number of new models waiting to make themselves useful in your high-end desktop PC.

The new cards will be delivered in special little wooden boxes that the company has trademarked as the “WoodBox.” This will certainly give computer users a sense of uniqueness and provide the cards with an upmarket packaging.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on the pricing of any of these cards.

Major iPhone SMS Vunerability Found

A major vulnerability in how the iPhone handles SMS has been found by security researcher Charlie Miller.

During a presentation at the SyScan conference in Singapore, Miller announced the vunerability and warned of its capabilities.

“The SMS vulnerability allows an attacker to run software code on the phone that is sent by SMS over a mobile operator’s network. The malicious code could include commands to monitor the location of the phone using GPS, turn on the phone’s microphone to eavesdrop on conversations, or make the phone join a distributed denial of service attack or a botnet.”

According to HotHardware, Miller has made an arrangement with Apple giving them until the Black Hat USA expo in Las Vegas to fix the issue.

Apple says they will have a fix ready “later this month.”
